These are spots where you can enjoy not only swimming and sunbathing but also experience the “Greek summer” in all its glory.
“Enchanting Crete is the ultimate paradise among the Greek islands—hence its global popularity. According to INSETE, from January to August 2023, Crete welcomed 3.7 million international air arrivals. While its stunning coastal shores are iconic, there are still many equally dazzling, less-traveled beaches worth discovering,” the article says.
Agiofarango
The list begins with Agiofarango, describing it as “a pebbled gem located on the southernmost tip of Crete, nestled beneath a stunning gorge—its name, Agiofarango, translates to ‘Gorge of the Saints.’ You can reach it by boat from places like Matala or Agia Galini, but the most adventurous way is on foot. A 45-minute hike takes you through towering canyon walls, leading you to a breathtaking beach with crystal-clear waters.
Usually tranquil, this beach is perfect for paddling, and on the western side, there’s a rocky arch where you can swim. It’s not the easiest beach to get to, but this quiet treasure is well worth the effort.”
Glyka Nera
Glyka Nera is known for its unique charm, where towering cliffs give way to gleaming white pebbles and the clearest turquoise waters. This hidden gem on the southern coast isn’t easy to reach: you can either embark on a 30-minute adventurous hike from Chora Sfakion or take a sea taxi.
Its name, which means “sweet water,” comes from the refreshing freshwater springs bubbling beneath the surface. In the summer, you’ll find a few sunbeds and a small taverna for drinks and food, as well as some tamarisk trees offering shade. Take note—Glyka Nera is a clothing-optional beach.
Voulolimni Beach
Voulolimni is a beautiful natural pool, offering a refreshing change from the usual sandy or pebbled beaches of Crete. Popular among locals, this saltwater pool is located half a kilometer northwest of the Byzantine monastery of Chrysoskalitissa on the island’s western coast.
Sheltered from the strong winds that often sweep through the region, its emerald waters are calm, making it a stunning spot for swimming. Don’t forget to bring your snorkeling gear.
Elafonisi
Tucked away in a remote corner of Crete, Elafonisi is a well-known gem, often crowded on summer weekends. However, its raw beauty makes the trip worthwhile: its glassy, turquoise waters meet swirling pastel-pink sands—a natural phenomenon caused by countless seashells washed ashore over the years.
There are sunbeds and umbrellas for rent along the main beach and lagoon, and the shallow waters make it ideal for families.
Falassarna
Located on Crete’s western coast, the short but somewhat exhausting journey to Falassarna may be off-putting at first, with views of the sea obscured by greenhouses surrounded by olive groves. But once you arrive at this vast stretch of beach, everything is forgotten.
Falassarna is one of Crete’s most stunning beaches, offering plenty of space to spread out your towel. The water is incredibly clear, and the views are endless. Behind the beach, a hill is dotted with tavernas and villas for rent. Be cautious of the waves, but the sunset will make you forget all about them.
