The Cretan Village That Takes You Back in Time!

This hidden gem in Lassithi is a must-visit for anyone exploring the region. Over the past decade, the village has been revitalized by a new generation of locals determined to restore its former glory. While most people associate Crete with its stunning beaches—often praised by international media—and its world-renowned cuisine, there are villages like Kastelli Fourni that hold their own as cultural treasures.

Located in the Epano Merambello area of Lassithi, about 17 km from the city of Agios Nikolaos, Kastelli Fourni is known for its laid-back atmosphere and effortless tranquility. It’s one of the oldest villages on the island, with a history that dates back to around 1400 AD.

Declared a traditional settlement, the village gets its name from the Venetian word Kastelium, meaning fortress. Visitors will be struck by the distinctive architecture, with its strong Venetian influences, evoking the charm of Venice—though without the canals.

Wandering through the village’s narrow, picturesque alleys, you’ll find architectural gems, courtyards bursting with greenery and flowers, terraces shaded by vine canopies that protect homes from the summer sun, and welcoming residents living life at a slow, peaceful pace.

Highlights include the Byzantine Church of the Holy Apostles, with its remarkable frescoes, and the historic Monastery of Afentis Christos. In fact, due to its numerous monasteries, the area has earned the nickname “Mount Athos of Crete.”
