The installation of a new smart traffic light system has begun at the intersection of Markou Botsari and Apokoronou streets in Chania. This innovative system will be implemented at key locations throughout the Municipality of Chania.
The new smart traffic light system features a central tele-monitoring and dynamic management platform. It includes modern equipment to be installed at 15 traffic light junctions, advanced traffic detectors with cameras, and dynamic operation based on real-time traffic conditions.
Additionally, pedestrian touch devices with audio signals and countdown timers will be installed at intervention points, ensuring safe and uninterrupted passage for individuals with visual impairments for the first time in the Municipality of Chania.
The project is supervised by the Technical Services Department of the Municipality of Chania, with interventions planned at the following locations:
- Markou Botsari – Apokoronou
- Kissamou – Skalidi
- Margouniou – Kydonias
- Skalidi – Chalidon
- Kydonias – Sfakianaki
- Karaiskaki – Chatzimichali
- Tzanakaki – Venizelos Square
- Apokoronou – Kydonias
- Foka – Dimokratias
- Foka – Daskalogianni
- Markou Botsari – Anapauseos
- Solomou – Sfakianaki
- Kladisos
- Kissamou – Saridantoni
- Markou Botsari – M. Gonias
Work will continue on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at the intersections of N. Foka – An. Papandreou and Tzanakaki – Eleftherios Venizelos Square. During installation, while the traffic lights are non-operational, road users are advised to follow traffic regulations and exercise caution.
This initiative is part of the “Integrated Intelligent Traffic Light System” project within the A/A2 Contract “Smart City Actions in Sustainable Mobility and E-Governance of the Municipality of Chania.” The project, “Greek Smart Cities: Investments in SSC Infrastructure and Systems for a Sustainable & Green Urban Future,” is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund “GREECE 2.0,” with a budget of €329,108.
