Tourism in Crete has soared this year, with official data showing a remarkable increase in international arrivals. The island welcomed 5.3 million travelers between January and October 2024, marking a 7% rise compared to the same period in 2023.
A Broader Growth Trend
Across Greece, international air arrivals for January–October 2024 reached 24.9 million, surpassing the 23 million recorded in 2023 and reflecting an 8.1% increase (+1.9 million arrivals). The upward trend accelerated in October, with 2.3 million international arrivals—a 10.9% rise (+227,000).
Among regional destinations:
- Crete recorded 5.3 million arrivals (+7.1% / +351,000).
- The Dodecanese Islands welcomed 4.4 million visitors (+10.3% / +413,000).
- The Ionian Islands saw 3.8 million arrivals (+5.5% / +196,000).
- The Peloponnese experienced the highest percentage increase, with 229,000 arrivals (+13.9% / +28,000).
In contrast, the Cyclades saw a slight decline, with 1.3 million arrivals (-0.8% / -10,000).
Airbnb Market Trends
The short-term rental market shows signs of plateauing, as indicated by data from INSETE (Institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation). In October 2024, the number of short-term rental properties dropped slightly for the second consecutive month, standing at 225,000. This was, however, a notable increase (+25,000) from October 2023.
Similarly, the number of available beds decreased to 992,000 in October 2024, yet this remains higher than the 887,000 beds recorded in October 2023 (+105,000).
Outlook
While international arrivals continue to rise across Greece, the slight decline in the short-term rental sector suggests a potential stabilization in this market. For Crete, the 2024 season stands out as a record-breaking year, confirming its position as a premier tourist destination in the Mediterranean.
