Forbes: Crete Offers the Best of the Mediterranean for Retirees

A recent Forbes feature highlights five destinations offering a safer, more affordable, and fulfilling retirement abroad. The selected locations—Valencia in Spain, Cascais in Portugal, Medellín in Colombia, Crete in Greece, and Mazatlán in Mexico—are described as ideal for expats seeking a stress-free and rewarding retirement in 2025.

Regarding Crete, the report states: A historically rich Mediterranean island bathed in sunshine. Crete offers the best of the Mediterranean—abundant sunshine, sparkling sea views, rugged landscapes, and delicious local cuisine known for its health benefits.

As the largest and most populous Greek island, Crete provides a variety of lifestyle choices, from cosmopolitan cities like Heraklion and Chania to rustic mountain villages with traditional architecture and secluded areas surrounded by olive groves.

The island boasts remarkable geography, including snow-capped mountains, ski resorts, pink sand beaches, dramatic cliffs, and some of Europe’s longest and deepest gorges.

Situated at the geographical crossroads of major civilizations—Europe, Asia, and Africa—Crete has deep historical roots, with monuments reflecting its rich past scattered across the island.

Living costs on the Mediterranean island are low. With an estimated monthly budget of just $1,873, an expatriate couple can live comfortably here—63% less than the average annual spending for Americans aged 65 and older in the U.S.

For long-term residence in Greece, many retirees opt for the financially independent person permit. The primary requirement is proof of income of €3,500 ($3,585) per month. This residence permit is valid for two years and is renewable.
