Chania: Installation of New Retractable Bollards in the Old Town and Venetian Harbor Begins

Work will begin on Theotokopoulou Street this Tuesday, as part of a pioneering vehicle access control system initiated by the municipal authorities. The new system aims to enhance security and manage traffic more effectively in the historic area.

A total of eleven hydraulic retractable bollards will be installed at key locations within the Old Town and Venetian Harbor. These barriers are designed to prevent unauthorized motor vehicle access while allowing seamless passage for emergency vehicles, such as fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars, through an automatic recognition system.

The installation on Theotokopoulou Street is expected to take approximately one week. In the meantime, temporary metal plates will be placed to ensure continued access for authorized vehicles until the full deployment of the system.

This project falls under the “Smart Access Control System for the Venetian Harbor of Chania,” as part of the broader initiative “Smart City Actions in Sustainable Mobility and E-Governance for the Municipality of Chania.” The project is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility “Greece 2.0” with a budget of €313,226.
